How to teach this
Capital Z starts a little below the top line on the left with a small hook. Curve up and over to the right, then down and back to the left to a sharp point below the middle line. From the point make a small curve to the right that runs down through the bottom line into a loop. Swing the loop to the left, come back up to close at the bottom line and finish with a stroke out to the right, into the next letter. Lowercase z is the same at the small size: start with a hook just under the middle line, curve over and back to the point between the middle line and the bottom line, then the small curve, the loop below the line, and out at the bottom line.
Watch for: Writing the print z with two flat lines and a slant. The cursive z has no straight lines at all. Lowercase z with no loop, so it sits on the line like a 3. The tail goes below the line and loops back up.
Common questions about cursive Z
- Why does cursive z go below the line?
- Its bottom half is a tail with a loop, like the bottom of g or y. The top half sits on the line like a small 3, and the tail hangs underneath.
- Is cursive capital Z the same as lowercase z?
- Same strokes, but only the top half changes size. The capital starts below the top line and the lowercase just under the middle line; the tail and the loop below the line are about the same size on both.
