How to teach this
Capital Y starts with a small hook on the left, a little below the top line. Swing up to the top line, slide down and round the bottom just above the bottom line, then swing up the right side to the top line. From there slide straight down through the bottom line, loop to the left below it, come back up to close at the bottom line and finish out to the right. Lowercase y starts at the middle line. Slide down, round the bottom and come up to the middle line, then slide straight down below the bottom line, loop to the left and come back up to close at the bottom line before going out to the right. The top of y is the start of u; the bottom is the tail of g and j. Written alone, as on the sheet, lowercase y has no lead-in stroke; in a word, the join from the letter before runs up into where it starts.
Watch for: The tail of lowercase y left as a hook that never comes back up. The loop closes at the bottom line. Lowercase y's first dip pushed below the bottom line. It rounds on the line, and only the straight line goes below.
Common questions about cursive Y
- Which part of cursive y goes below the line?
- Only the second line and its loop. The first dip rounds on the bottom line, then the right side climbs to the middle line and comes straight down past the bottom line into the loop.
- Is cursive y like cursive g?
- Below the line, yes: both loops swing left and close on the bottom line. Above the line y is a u shape and g is an oval.
