A mixed sheet that draws letters from the whole alphabet prints from 3rd grade cursive alphabet.
How to teach this
Capital R starts like P: a little hook on the left, a climb to the top line and a straight line down to the bottom line. Go back up the line and make a bump to the right that comes back in to a tiny loop at the middle line, then kick a leg down to the bottom line and flick up into the next letter. Lowercase r starts on the bottom line. Swing up a little past the middle line to a tiny loop, make a short step to the right, then slide down to the bottom line and flick out. The step is what makes it an r. Without it the r looks like an i with no dot.
Watch for: Lowercase r drawn like a print r, a line and a hump. The cursive r climbs past the middle line to a tiny loop, steps right, and comes down. Capital R's leg started away from the bump. It starts at the tiny loop in the middle.
Common questions about cursive R
- Why does cursive r look so different from print?
- Its parts come in a different order. Print r goes down and then makes a hump; cursive r swings up to a tiny loop just above the middle line, takes a small step to the right, and then comes down. The step at the top is the part to watch.
- Is the bump on capital R the same as on capital P?
- Yes, down to the middle. R's bump comes in to a tiny loop and the leg kicks out from there; P's bump stops short of the line.
