Cursive J worksheets
Cursive J worksheets for third grade, for second and fourth graders as well. The sheet traces capital J and lowercase j on alternate rows as dotted outlines on penmanship lines, with room to write each alone. Both letters hang a loop below the bottom line, and the rows leave space under the line for it.

One page for every cursive letter
Each cursive letter has its own page, with how the capital and the lowercase are formed and a sheet of that one letter to trace.
What's on each sheet
- One letter, capital and small. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
A mixed sheet that draws letters from the whole alphabet prints from 3rd grade cursive alphabet.
How to teach this
Capital J starts a little above the bottom line on the left. Curve up to the top line, curl over to the right, then slide straight down through the bottom line. Below the line, loop to the left, come back up to close the loop at the bottom line and finish with a stroke out to the right, which leads into the next letter. Lowercase j starts at the middle line. Slide straight down below the bottom line, loop to the left, come back up to close at the bottom line and go out to the right. Dot it last. The lower loop is the same on both, and on g and y too: it swings back to the left. Written alone, as on the sheet, lowercase j has no lead-in stroke; in a word, the join from the letter before runs up into where it starts.
Watch for: The loop below the line left open, so the j ends as a hook. Bring it back up to the bottom line before going out. Capital J started at the top like print. The cursive capital J starts low on the left and climbs to its top curl.
Common questions about cursive J
- Which cursive letters have the same loop as j?
- g, y and z, and capital J, Y and Z, hang the same loop below the line, swinging left and closing on the bottom line. The p's narrow loop swings left too, closing just above the line. q and f are the two whose bottom loop comes back up on the right.
- Why does cursive capital J go below the line?
- Capital J has a tail, and its loop hangs below the bottom line just like the lowercase j's. Leave room on the line underneath when your child writes it in a name.
