One page for every cursive letter
Each cursive letter has its own page, with how the capital and the lowercase are formed and a sheet of that one letter to trace.
What's on each sheet
- One letter, capital and small. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
A mixed sheet that draws letters from the whole alphabet prints from 3rd grade cursive alphabet.
How to teach this
Capital S starts on the bottom line at the left. Swing up and to the right to the top line, make a small loop at the top, then come down the right side in a curve to the bottom line and curl back in on the left. The curl ends inside the letter, so capital S does not join. Lowercase s starts on the bottom line too. Swing up to a point just above the middle line, where the line makes a tiny loop, then curve down the right side to the bottom line and close back toward the start. In a word, the next letter leaves from the bottom of the s. Lowercase s changes more from print than almost any letter, so give it extra rows.
Watch for: Lowercase s started at the top as in print. Cursive s starts on the bottom line and climbs to its point. Lowercase s with a round top, like a print s. Its top is a point, with a tiny loop, a little above the middle line.
Common questions about cursive S
- Why does cursive lowercase s look so odd?
- It goes up before it comes down. From the bottom line the pencil climbs to a point above the middle line, then curves down the right side and closes at the bottom. Once a child sees it as up, point, down, around, it stops looking odd.
- Does cursive capital S join the next letter?
- No. Its last move is a curl back into the letter, so the next letter starts on its own.
