Cursive W worksheets

The picture follows the options you pick.

Cursive W worksheets for third grade, for second and fourth graders too. The sheet traces capital W and lowercase w as dotted outlines on alternate rows, with room on each row to write it alone. Both are rounded at the bottom and both end high, which is the thing to watch.

One page for every cursive letter

Each cursive letter has its own page, with how the capital and the lowercase are formed and a sheet of that one letter to trace.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

A mixed sheet that draws letters from the whole alphabet prints from 3rd grade cursive alphabet.

How to teach this

Capital W starts with a small hook on the left, a little below the top line. Swing up to the top line, slide down, round the bottom and swing up to a point below the top line. Come back down the same line, round the bottom again and swing up the right side to the top line, finishing with a tiny loop and a short stroke out to the right. It does not join. Lowercase w starts at the middle line. Slide down, round the bottom and come up to the middle line, go back down the same line, round the bottom again and swing up to the middle line, and stop. Like v, w ends at the middle line: in a word it makes a small curl there and the join leaves from it. Written alone, as on the sheet, lowercase w has no lead-in stroke; in a word, the join from the letter before runs up into where it starts.

Watch for: Lowercase w with sharp points at the bottom, as in print. Both bottoms are rounded. A capital W whose middle point climbs to the top line. In this style it stops below it, lower than the two sides.

Common questions about cursive W

How does cursive w end?
At the middle line, after the second upswing, with nothing going back down. In a word the stroke into the next letter runs from there.
Is cursive w a u and a v put together?
Close enough to help. The first half is a u: down, round, up and back down the same line. The second half is a v: round the bottom and up to the middle line, where it stops.
