Cursive A worksheets

The picture follows the options you pick.

Cursive A worksheets for third grade, and for second or fourth graders still learning their cursive capitals. The sheet traces capital A and lowercase a as dotted outlines on alternate rows, with room on each row to write the letter alone. In cursive the two are one shape at two sizes.

One page for every cursive letter

Each cursive letter has its own page, with how the capital and the lowercase are formed and a sheet of that one letter to trace.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

A mixed sheet that draws letters from the whole alphabet prints from 3rd grade cursive alphabet.

How to teach this

Capital A starts at the top line. Curve back to the left and down around a tall oval to the bottom line, swing up to close it near the top, then slide straight down the right side and finish with a small flick at the bottom. Lowercase a is the same motion at half the height: start at the middle line, curve back and around to the bottom line, come up to close the oval at the middle line, slide straight down and flick out. That flick carries into the next letter, so both a's join on the bottom line. Say it while tracing: around, up, down, flick. Written alone, as on the sheet, lowercase a has no lead-in stroke; in a word, the join from the letter before runs up into where it starts.

Watch for: The oval left open at the top, so the a reads as a u. Close it before the pencil starts down. A separate stick added after the oval. The line down the right side comes straight out of the closing stroke, without a lift.

Common questions about cursive A

Why does cursive capital A look like a big lowercase a?
Because in cursive it is one: the lowercase shape drawn up to the top line. That is why the two are easy to learn together. The pointed print A with its crossbar is not used in school cursive.
Does cursive a join the letter after it?
Yes. Capital A and lowercase a both end with a flick on the bottom line, and the next letter starts from that flick.
