One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital Z is one line that never lifts. Start at the top line on the left and go across to the right. Slant down to the bottom line on the left, then go across the bottom to the right. Say it: across, slant, across. Small z is the same shape between the middle line and the bottom line. The sound is a buzz, zzz, like a bee, with the voice on. Let your child put a hand on their throat and feel it. Z and S have one thing in common: both are easy to write backwards, and for both the fix is where the pencil starts.

Watch for: A backwards Z, starting at the top right and going left. Z starts on the left and goes right, like reading. The slant going the wrong way, from top left to bottom right. That makes something like an N lying on its side. The slant runs from the top right corner down to the bottom left.

Common questions about letter Z

Why is there no words sheet for Z?
The picture bank has three things that start with the z sound: a zoo, a zebra and a zipper. A words sheet needs at least four, so Z prints the letter sheet only for now.
How is the z sound different from s?
Same mouth shape, with the voice turned on. Put your child's hand on their throat and say sss, then zzz: the buzz they feel is the z. Say zebra and zoo together and make the buzz last.
My child writes Z backwards. What helps?
Start at the same place every time, the top left corner, and say "across, slant, across" aloud. A backwards Z almost always starts on the right.
