Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
moon
mop
mouse
map
milk
man
mitten
monkey
muffin
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter. Each print takes 6 of the 9, so the next sheet is a different mix.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. 6 of the 9 words, a new mix every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital M starts with a line down from the top. Go back to the top, slant down to the middle of the space, slant back up to the top line, and finish with a line straight down. It is four strokes, two tall and two slanted, and the slants meet in the middle, not on the bottom line. Small m starts at the middle line: a short line down, back up, a hump over and down, then a second hump over and down. Two humps, not three. M is an easy sound to feel: lips together and hum, mmm, the sound in moon and mom. The words sheet picks six of nine words for each print.
Watch for: Small m grows a third hump, especially when a child is enjoying the up and over. Count them aloud as they go: one, two, stop. Capital M and W get turned over. M stands on two straight legs; W is a V twice and has none. Tracing the M first, then looking for it at the start of moon, helps it settle.
Common questions about letter M
- Which words does the M words sheet use?
- Six of moon, mop, mouse, map, milk, man, mitten, monkey and muffin, a different six or a different order on every print.
- Why is M a good early letter?
- Its sound is a hum they can feel on their lips, and it starts words they say every day, like mom and milk. That makes it a friendly letter to practise, even before a child can write it neatly.
- How many humps does small m have?
- Two. It starts at the middle line with a short line down, then goes up and over twice. Small n is the same with one hump, so it is worth tracing both in the same week.
