Letter Q worksheets

The picture follows the options you pick.

A letter Q worksheet for ages three to five, in preschool or kindergarten. It prints capital Q and small q as dotted outlines on alternate rows, with space after each to write the letter alone. Q has the tracing sheet only, without pictures.

Free printable PDF worksheet.

One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital Q is an O with a tail. Make the circle first, starting near the top and going round to the left, then add a short slanted line across the bottom right. Small q starts like a small a: a circle between the middle and bottom lines, going round to the left. Then go up to the middle line and straight down below the bottom line, finishing with a little flick. Q almost always comes with u, and the two together say kw, as in queen and quilt. Say kw when you name the sound, not kyoo. There is no words sheet for Q: queen and quilt are the only Q pictures we have, and a sheet needs four.

Watch for: Small q written facing the other way becomes p. The q starts with the circle and its line comes last; the p starts with the line. The tail on capital Q drawn inside the circle, or left off, turns it into an O. It crosses the bottom right edge and pokes out.

Common questions about letter Q

Why is there no Q words sheet?
Very few words a preschooler knows start with q. We have pictures for queen and quilt, and a words sheet needs at least four, so Q has the tracing sheet only.
What sound does Q make?
Q is nearly always followed by u, and the pair says kw: queen, quilt, quack. Teach the two together rather than giving q a sound of its own.
When should my child learn Q?
Late is fine. Q turns up in very few words a young child says, so the letters in your child's name and the common sounds come first.
