Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
pig
pen
pan
pie
pot
pup
pear
pizza
pencil
parrot
penguin
pumpkin
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter. Each print takes 6 of the 12, so the next sheet is a different mix.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. 6 of the 12 words, a new mix every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital P is a line and one bump. Pull a line down from the top line to the bottom, go back to the top, and make a bump to the right that comes back to the line at the middle. Small p starts at the middle line, goes straight down past the bottom line, then back up and round to the right into a small circle that sits on the bottom line. P is a puff of air with the lips, p, not puh. Hold a hand in front of your mouth and feel it, then let your child try. It is the same mouth shape as b, with air instead of voice. The words sheet takes six of twelve words each print.
Watch for: Small p and small q are mirror images. The p starts with the line going down; the q starts with the circle. Saying "down, up, around" for p keeps them apart. Small p comes out sitting on the bottom line, stick and all, like a short b. Its line drops into the space below the bottom line, and only the circle sits above it.
Common questions about letter P
- What words are on the P words sheet?
- Six of these twelve, mixed each time you print: pig, pen, pan, pie, pot, pup, pear, pizza, pencil, parrot, penguin and pumpkin.
- How do I help with p and q?
- Teach p by its first stroke, the line that drops below the bottom guide. A q starts with the circle instead. Print the two on different days, never side by side, until p comes out the same way every time.
- Why are there no ph words, like phone?
- Ph says f, not p, so a child listening for the first sound would hear the wrong thing. Every word on the sheet starts with the p you can feel as a puff of air.
