One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

The words you'll trace

Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.

  • webweb
  • wigwig
  • wellwell
  • wagonwagon
  • windowwindow
  • watermelonwatermelon

Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.

These are every picture the sheet has for this letter, so all 6 print each time, in a new order.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital W is four slanted lines in one go: down, up, down, up. Start at the top line on the left, slide down to the bottom, up to the top, down again and up again, so there are two points at the bottom. Small w makes the same zigzag between the middle line and the bottom line. Count the lines out loud as you trace. The sound is w as in web: round the lips and push them forward, then open. The words sheet keeps to that sound, so there is no wrench or write, where the w is silent, and no whale.

Watch for: W and M are the same zigzag turned over. W starts at the top and goes down first, and its two points sit on the bottom line. Losing count and making three points or one. Count the points at the bottom together, one and two, then stop.

Common questions about letter W

Which words are on the W words sheet?
Web, wig, well, wagon, window and watermelon. All six print every time, in a new order.
Why aren't whale or write on the W sheet?
In write and wrench the w is silent, so a child who says the word hears r. Whale starts with wh. Each word on the sheet starts with the plain w sound.
Is W harder than V?
A little. It is two V shapes joined, so a child who can make a V has the movement already. The hard part is stopping after the fourth line.
