Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
ball
bus
bed
bee
bell
bear
boat
book
box
bag
bone
banana
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter. Each print takes 6 of the 12, so the next sheet is a different mix.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. 6 of the 12 words, a new mix every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital B is one line and two bumps. Start at the top line and pull straight down. Go back to the top and make a bump that meets the line in the middle, then a second, slightly bigger bump that comes back to the bottom. Small b is a tall line down from the top, then back up halfway and round to the right into a little ball on the bottom line. Say it as you go: down, up, around. Then say the sound. B is a quick puff with closed lips, b, not buh, so a child can hear it at the start of bus and ball. On the words sheet, have your child say the picture's name first, then trace. One sheet is plenty for a sitting at this age.
Watch for: Small b and small d get swapped more than any other pair, because they are the same shapes facing opposite ways. The order is the fix: b is the line first, then the ball. Saying "down, up, around" every time does more than any mirror trick. Two equal bumps on capital B make it look like a stack of balls. The top bump is a little smaller, and both start from the straight line.
Common questions about letter B
- What age are letter B worksheets for?
- Three to five. Most three year olds start by tracing the capital with a finger, and by four many can follow the dotted line with a pencil. A kindergartner who still reverses b and d gets good use out of them too.
- Which words are on the B words sheet?
- Six of these twelve, in a new mix each time you print: ball, bus, bed, bee, bell, bear, boat, book, box, bag, bone and banana. Every word has a picture, and every one starts with the b sound.
- How do I stop my child mixing up b and d?
- Teach b by its stroke order: the tall line comes first, then the ball on the bottom line. A child who starts with the circle has made a d. Print this sheet and the letter D sheet on different days, not side by side.
