Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
lion
leaf
lamp
leg
lock
log
lid
ladder
ladybug
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter. Each print takes 6 of the 9, so the next sheet is a different mix.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. 6 of the 9 words, a new mix every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
L is a good first letter. Capital L is two strokes: a line straight down from the top line, then without lifting, a line along the bottom to the right. Small l is just the tall line, top to bottom, one stroke. That makes it easy to trace and easy to confuse: small l looks like the number 1, so name it each time, small l. For the sound, put the tongue tip behind the top teeth and hum, l, as at the start of lion and leaf. The words sheet draws six of nine words, so a second print brings a different mix.
Watch for: The foot of capital L goes left. It always points right, the way we read. A child who draws it backwards can check against the first letter of a word on the words sheet. Small l comes out as short as an i. It reaches the top line, as tall as the capital. The guides show where it has to go.
Common questions about letter L
- Is L a good letter to start with?
- Yes. It is only straight lines, so a three year old can trace it before curves like S or G. If L is in your child's name, start there.
- How do I tell small l from capital I?
- In this print, capital I has a short line across the top and another across the bottom, and small l is one plain tall line. Point out the two short lines; they are the whole difference. The words on the L sheet all start with the plain one.
- What words are on the L words sheet?
- Six of these nine, mixed each time: lion, leaf, lamp, leg, lock, log, lid, ladder and ladybug.
