One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

The words you'll trace

Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.

  • nestnest
  • netnet
  • nailnail
  • nosenose
  • nursenurse

Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.

These are every picture the sheet has for this letter, so all 5 print each time, in a new order.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital N is three lines. Pull one straight down from the top. Go back to the top of that line and slant down to the bottom on the right. Then go straight up to the top line. Small n starts at the middle line: a short line down, back up, and one hump over and down to the bottom line. The sound is a hum through the nose with the tongue behind the top teeth, n, as in nest and nose. Children who hold their nose while they say it can feel the sound stop, which they usually enjoy. The words sheet has five words and prints all of them each time, in a new order.

Watch for: Small n turned upside down is u, and children sometimes write one for the other. The n starts with a line going down and the hump comes after; u starts with the curve. The slant on capital N goes the wrong way, so the letter reads backwards. It runs from the top of the first line down to the bottom of the second.

Common questions about letter N

What is on the N words sheet?
Nest, net, nail, nose and nurse, with a picture beside each word. All five print every time, shuffled.
Should I teach n and m together?
Many teachers do. Small n is one hump and small m is two, made the same way. Print this sheet one day and the letter M sheet the next.
My child mixes up n and u. What helps?
Say the strokes out loud: down, up and over for n. A u starts with the curve at the bottom. Trace a row of each and look at where the pencil went in first.
