A name tracing generator makes the sheet for one child. A three or four year old's name is the first word they want to write. This sheet prints it as a dotted outline on wide penmanship guides, one row per line, with room to try it alone after the trace. Type the name above the print button, or let the sheet choose one.

The kind of words you'll practice

Trace your name on each line. Then write it yourself.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

The sheet is built from the name you type, so the same name always prints the same page. Leave the box empty and each print picks a name for you.

What's on a preschool sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Trace one row with a finger before any pencil, saying the letters. Then one row with a fat pencil or crayon, and stop. A three or four year old's hand tires in minutes; the second row can wait until tomorrow. Capitals only where the model has them, usually just the first letter, and small letters everywhere else, from the start.

Watch for: Tracing over the dots is the start, not the finish. The sheet leaves the rest of each line empty on purpose: the name written alone, from the traced model, is the practice that sticks. Copy the capitals the model shows. Most names have one capital at the start (Maya), some have more (Mary Jane, O'Neil), and the rest are small letters. A name written in all capitals is easier to draw and harder to read; from the second row on, steer the pencil to the small letters.

Common questions about preschool name tracing generator

What is a name tracing worksheet?
A sheet with the child's own name printed as dotted outlines on penmanship lines, several rows to trace and then write alone. You type the name on the page and print.
What age can a child trace their name?
Three to four, starting with the first letter. Writing the whole name without the dots usually comes at four or five.
Can I print it in cursive?
Yes. The style switch on the page prints the name in unjoined school cursive instead of print letters.
Is a three-year-old ready to trace a name?
If they can hold a crayon and follow a dotted line, yes. Start with four rows, a finger before the pencil, and stop while it is still fun.
Can I put in any name?
Letters, spaces, apostrophes and hyphens, up to 24 characters. Leave the box empty and the sheet picks a name from its own list.
