One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

The words you'll trace

Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.

  • goatgoat
  • giftgift
  • gategate
  • girlgirl
  • glassglass
  • globeglobe
  • glueglue
  • gumgum
  • grapesgrapes

Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.

These are every picture the sheet has for this letter. Each print takes 6 of the 9, so the next sheet is a different mix.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital G starts as a C. Begin a little below the top line, curve back around to the left and down to the bottom, come up the right side to the middle, then make a short line in toward the middle. Small g in this print has one round part and a tail, the way children write it. Start at the middle line, go around like a c and close the circle, then pull a line down past the bottom line and hook it to the left. G has a hard sound, the one in goat and gift, made at the back of the throat, and a soft sound in giraffe and gem. The words sheet uses only the hard sound.

Watch for: Small g and small q have the same circle and a tail below the line, so they swap. The g tail hooks back to the left; q's tail goes the other way. Trace them on different days. The tail of small g often stops on the bottom line. It goes down below it, into the space under the line, before it hooks.

Common questions about letter G

Why is giraffe not on the G words sheet?
Giraffe starts with the soft g, which sounds like j. A preschooler listening for the g in goat would hear a different sound, so the sheet keeps to hard g words.
What words are on the G words sheet?
Six of goat, gift, gate, girl, glass, globe, glue, gum and grapes, mixed fresh each time you print, each with its picture.
Why does the small g look different from the g in books?
Books often use a g with two loops. Children write the simpler one, a circle with a hooked tail, so that is the shape your child traces.
