Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital U starts at the top line. Pull down, curve round at the bottom like the bottom of a cup, and come back up to the top line. Small u is the same cup between the middle line and the bottom line, then a short straight line back down on the right side. Say it as you go: down, around, up, down. U has two sounds your child will meet: the short u in up and umbrella, and its name, as in unicorn. Short u comes first. Not many things a four year old can name start with short u, so say up, under and umbrella together while they trace.
Watch for: Small u and small n are the same shape turned over. If a u comes out as an n, look at where the pencil started: u starts at the middle line and goes down first. Leaving off the short line on the right of small u. Without it, small u is just a little capital U.
Common questions about letter U
- Why is there no words sheet for U?
- Only two pictures in our bank start with the short u sound, an umbrella and an arrow pointing up. A words sheet needs at least four, and we would rather print the letter sheet alone than fill it with words that start with other sounds.
- Does U make one sound or two?
- Two, at this stage. The short sound in up and umbrella, and the long one that says its name, as in unicorn. Teach the short one first; it is the one in most early words.
- My child writes u when they mean n. Is that normal?
- Yes. They are the same shape flipped, and mixing them is common in preschool. Trace the two on different days, and say where each one starts: n goes down from the middle line and humps over, u dips down and comes up.
