Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
fan
fish
fox
frog
fork
feet
flag
fire
flower
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter. Each print takes 6 of the 9, so the next sheet is a different mix.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. 6 of the 9 words, a new mix every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital F is E without the bottom line. Pull a line down from the top, then a line across the top going right, then a shorter line across the middle. Small f is a cane. Start a little below the top line on the right, hook up and over to the left, pull straight down to the bottom line, then cross it at the middle line. The f sound is made with the top teeth resting on the bottom lip and a long push of air, fff, with no voice. Have your child feel it on their lip before saying fish or fox.
Watch for: Capital F often gets a bottom line and turns into E. Trace the two letters on different days, and say for F: down, across the top, across the middle, stop. Small f and small t get mixed up because both have a line across. The hook on f is at the top; t is a straight line with its cross on the middle line.
Common questions about letter F
- Which words can appear on the F words sheet?
- Six of fan, fish, fox, frog, fork, feet, flag, fire and flower, with a new mix each print. Each word sits beside its picture.
- Why does small f start with a hook?
- The hook is what makes it an f and not a t. Starting at the top right and curving over keeps the hook small and the line straight. Starting at the bottom usually leaves a crooked hook.
- My child says fish as tish or pish. Should I worry?
- At three or four it is common. Show where the top teeth go on the bottom lip and blow the f together. Tracing the f while saying it helps the sound and the letter stick together.
