One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital Y is three short lines. Start at the top line on the left and slant down to the middle. Lift, start at the top on the right, and slant down to meet the first line. Then pull a straight line from there down to the bottom line. Small y is one of the letters that hangs below the line. In this print style it starts at the middle line, dips down and round like a small u, then a long tail drops below the bottom line and curves off to the left. Show your child the space under the line before they start. At the start of a word y is a consonant, the sound in yes, yak and yellow.

Watch for: Keeping the tail of small y above the bottom line. It belongs below, in the space under the line, like the tail of g. Leaving off the stem, so capital Y turns into V. The two slanted lines only meet in the middle, and the straight line finishes the letter.

Common questions about letter Y

Why is there no words sheet for Y?
The picture bank has three things that start with the y sound: a yak, a yam and yarn. A words sheet needs at least four, so for now Y prints the letter sheet only.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
Both, depending on where it sits. At the start of a word, as in yes and yellow, it is a consonant, and that is the sound to teach first. At the end of words like my and happy it works as a vowel, which comes later.
Where does small y go on the lines?
The top of it sits on the middle line and the tail hangs below the bottom line. That tail is what most children leave off at first.
