Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital I in this print is a straight line down from the top line with a short line across the top and another across the bottom. Make the tall line first, then the two short ones. Small i is a short line from the middle line down to the bottom line, then a dot above it, added last. The dot is the part children love and rush, so ask for the line first. I has a short sound, the one at the start of igloo, insect and itch, and it can say its own name, as in ice. There is no words sheet for I yet. The picture bank does not have enough pictures that start with the i sound, so name a few words out loud together instead.
Watch for: Children put the dot on first and then draw the line up to it, so the line wanders. The line comes first, from the middle line down, and the dot goes on last. Capital I without its short top and bottom lines looks like a small l. The short lines are what make it a capital in this print.
Common questions about letter I
- Why is there no words sheet for I?
- Every picture on a words sheet has to come from our checked picture bank and start with the letter's sound. For I that is only igloo and insect so far, too few for a sheet. The letter sheet is complete on its own.
- How can I tell capital I from small l?
- In this print, capital I has short lines across the top and bottom and small l is a single tall line. Trace both on the same day and ask your child to point to the one with the hat and shoes.
- Which sound of I should my preschooler learn first?
- The short one in igloo and itch. It is the sound i makes in most short words, like sit and pin. The name sound, as in ice, comes along easily once the letter is known.
