Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
key
kite
kitten
kettle
kangaroo
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter, so all 5 print each time, in a new order.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. All 5 words, in a new order every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital K is three straight lines. Pull one line down from the top. Then start at the top again, a little to the right, and slant in to touch the middle of that line, and slant back out to the bottom. Small k is the same idea, shorter: a tall line down from the top, then a small slant in from the middle line and out to the bottom. The two slants meet the tall line at one point. K says the same sound as c in cat, which is why kite and cat start alike. Knee is not on the words sheet: its k is silent, and a child who says the word hears n.
Watch for: The two slants miss each other and float off the line, so the K looks like a line and a less-than sign. Have them touch the tall line and then go out. Children who know cat often ask why kite is not spelled with a c. Both letters make that sound. Tell them so and move on; spelling rules can wait.
Common questions about letter K
- Which words are on the K words sheet?
- Key, kite, kitten, kettle and kangaroo, all five on every print in a new order. Each has a picture beside it.
- Why is knee not on the K sheet?
- The k in knee is silent. The words sheet asks a child to listen for the first sound, and knee starts with n, so it would teach the wrong thing.
- Is K harder than other letters to write?
- A little. It is all straight lines, which helps, but the two slants have to meet the tall line at the same spot. Four rows is a good start for a three year old.
