Free printable PDF worksheet.

One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

O is a circle, but where the pencil starts matters. Start just below the top line, a little to the right of where the top of the circle will be, and go up and round to the left, down and back up to close it. That is the same counterclockwise start as c, a, d and g, so a child who makes O this way has a head start on four more letters. Small o is the same circle, sitting between the middle line and the bottom. O has two common sounds: the short one in ox and octopus, and its own name in oak and go. There is no words sheet for O yet. The picture bank has only three pictures that start with the right o sounds, and a sheet needs four.

Watch for: Circles drawn clockwise, from the bottom, look fine on their own and cause trouble later in a and d. Watch where the pencil starts, not just whether the circle closes. Small o drawn as big as the capital. It sits in the lower half of the guides, the same height as a, c and e.

Common questions about letter O

Is there a letter O words sheet?
Not yet. A words sheet needs at least four pictures that start with the letter's sound, and we have three for O: octopus, ox and oak. Rather than pad it with words like owl or orange, which start with a different sound, O has the tracing sheet only.
Which way should my child draw the O?
Counterclockwise, starting near the top and going left first. It is the same start as c, a, d and g, so it pays off later.
What sounds does O make?
Two for a preschooler: the short o in ox and octopus, and the long o, its own name, in oak. You can say both while your child traces.
