Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
van
vase
vest
violin
volcano
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter, so all 5 print each time, in a new order.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. All 5 words, in a new order every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital V is two slanted lines that meet in a point. Start at the top line on the left and slide down to the bottom, then slide back up to the top line on the right without lifting the pencil. Small v is the same between the middle line and the bottom line. Say it: slide down, slide up. The sound is v as in van. The top teeth rest on the bottom lip and the voice buzzes, vvv. Many young children say b or f instead, so "bery" for very is nothing to worry about. Let your child feel the buzz with a finger on their lip.
Watch for: A rounded bottom turns V into U. The point is what makes it a v, so stop and turn sharply at the bottom line. Mixing up v and w. A w is two v shapes joined. Count the points at the bottom together: one for v, two for w.
Common questions about letter V
- How many words are on the V words sheet?
- Five: van, vase, vest, violin and volcano. Every print has all five in a new order, so a second copy is the same words shuffled.
- Why does my child say b for v?
- Because v is one of the harder sounds to make: the teeth have to rest on the lip while the voice buzzes. Saying b or f in its place is common in preschool. Say the words on the sheet slowly and let them copy you.
- Is V an easy letter to start with?
- Yes. Two straight lines and one point. It is a good letter for a child who has done L and T and is ready for a slant.
