Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every letter
Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
The words you'll trace
Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it.
jam
jet
jug
juice
jump
Every picture's name starts with the letter's sound, and beside it the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide. The key page writes the words out in ink.
These are every picture the sheet has for this letter, so all 5 print each time, in a new order.
What's on each sheet
- Letter tracing. Trace the letter on each line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 6 rows per page.
- Words that start with the letter. Say each picture's name. Listen for the first sound. Then trace the word beside it. All 5 words, in a new order every time you print.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.
How to teach this
Capital J starts at the top line. Pull straight down, and just before the bottom line curve round to the left, like a walking stick held upside down. In this print it also gets a short line across the top, added last. Small j starts at the middle line, goes down past the bottom line into the space below, and hooks left. Then lift the pencil and put a dot above it. The hook is the part that wanders. It always turns back to the left, toward the edge of the page. The sound is the one at the start of jam and jump, said short, j, not juh. The words sheet has only five words, so every print has all five in a new order.
Watch for: The hook turns the wrong way. A J that curls to the right reads as a backwards J. Point to where the line starts on the page and say the hook goes back that way. Small j stops on the bottom line. It is one of the letters that drops below the line, like g and y, and stopping short makes it look like an i with a curl.
Common questions about letter J
- Why does the J words sheet have only five words?
- Those are the J pictures we have that a preschooler names right away: jam, jet, jug, juice and jump. Every print uses all five, shuffled, so a second copy is the same words in a new order.
- Does small j go below the line?
- Yes. It starts at the middle line and its tail hangs below the bottom line before it hooks left. The guides on the sheet show the space it drops into.
- My child writes J backwards. Is that normal at four?
- Yes. Backwards letters are common well into kindergarten and first grade. Trace the J with a finger first and say down and hook back while doing it. The habit sticks faster than any correction on a finished page.
