Alphabet chart
An alphabet chart shows all 26 letters in order, each capital beside its small letter, in the plain print style children are taught to write. It is the reference for letter names, letter order and what each letter looks like in both cases.
Free printable PDF, preschool to 1st grade.
One page, black and white, prints the same every time.
What is on the sheet
The table below is the sheet as it prints with these options: Aa Bb Cc, No.
| Aa | Bb | Cc | Dd | Ee | Ff |
| Gg | Hh | Ii | Jj | Kk | Ll |
| Mm | Nn | Oo | Pp | Rr | |
| Ss | Tt | Uu | Vv | Ww | Xx |
| Yy | Zz |
One page for every letter
Each letter also has its own preschool page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.
A chart without pictures, on purpose
Most alphabet charts pair each letter with a picture, an apple for A. Pictures help with beginning sounds, but they also give a child something to look at instead of the letter, and they pin a sound to one word when many letters have more than one. This chart is the letters alone, large, in the same print face the handwriting sheets use, so what the child sees on the wall matches what they are asked to write.
The capital and small letter sit together in one cell. Children learn capital names first and small letters second; seeing the pair makes the link, and a child who confuses b and d can be sent to the chart to look.
Using it
Sing the alphabet while pointing to each cell. Say a letter and have the child find it; find a letter and ask for its name. Cover the small letters with a strip of paper and ask the child to write them from the capitals, then swap. Choose the numbered version for alphabetical order work, where "which comes first, M or P" can be checked by the numbers under each letter. Capitals only or small letters only are for the child who has learned one set and is starting the other.
Common questions
- What print style is this?
- A plain school print face with a single-storey a and g, the shapes children are taught to form in kindergarten. The same face prints the letter tracing sheets, so the chart and the practice match.
- Is there a cursive version?
- Yes, the cursive alphabet chart shows the same 26 letters in a cursive school style, for 2nd grade and up.
