One page for every letter

Each letter has its own page, with its strokes in words, its sounds and, for most letters, a sheet of words that start with it.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Every other letter prints from one form on Preschool letter tracing.

How to teach this

Capital X is two slanted lines that cross in the middle. Start at the top line on the left and slide down to the bottom line on the right. Lift the pencil, start at the top on the right, and slide down to the bottom on the left, crossing the first line halfway. Small x is the same between the middle line and the bottom line. Say it: slide down, lift, slide down. The sound is the odd one. X mostly comes at the end of a word and says ks, as in fox, box and six. At the start of a word it says z, as in xylophone, or its own name, as in x-ray. So at this age X is a letter to trace and name, and its sound is best heard at the end of fox.

Watch for: X drawn as a plus sign, one line straight down and one straight across. Both lines slant from corner to corner. Lines that cross too high or too low, so one half is short. Aim for the middle of the space and the four arms come out even.

Common questions about letter X

Why is there no words sheet for X?
Hardly any words a preschooler knows start with the x sound, and the picture bank has none. Rather than fill a sheet with words that start with other sounds, X prints the letter sheet only.
What sound does X make?
Mostly ks, at the end of a word: fox, box, six. Say fox slowly with your child and listen for the ks at the end. At the start of a word, x usually says z or its own name.
When should my preschooler learn X?
Late is fine. It is a quick letter to write, two crossing lines, but it turns up in few early words. Most children learn it near the end of the alphabet, and that is all right.
