Preschool color words worksheets
Color words worksheets for preschool, for three and four year olds. Each sheet prints six of ten color words, from red and blue to black and white, in a big print face on penmanship guides. Your child traces each word twice and then writes it alone, which ties a color they already know to the word that names it.

The kind of words you'll practice
Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.
Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a preschool sheet
Preschool sheets draw from 10 words, 6 to a page. Pre-K and kindergarten print from the same 10 words. The teaching notes below are written for this grade.
- Tracing. Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line. 6 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.
How to teach this
Before the pencil comes out, find the color. Hold up a red crayon, say red, then point to the word on the sheet. Trace each word with a finger first, then with a crayon in that same color, so the finished sheet shows each word in its own color and your child can read it back to you. Two or three rows a sitting is plenty at this age. Each print draws a different six of the ten colors.
Watch for: Saying a color is not the same as reading its word. A child who says red for every row is guessing; point under each word and say it together before tracing. Yellow, orange and purple are long words for a small hand. A break after three rows is fine, and the letters matter more than finishing the page.
Common questions about preschool color words
- Which color words are on the sheet?
- Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black and white. Each print shows six of them, so a few prints cover all ten.
- Is my preschooler too young for color words?
- Knowing the colors comes first, and most three and four year olds do. The words come next. Tracing a word with the matching crayon links the two without any pressure to read it yet.
