How to teach this
Start at the top line, toward the right. Go round to the left in a small circle that fills the top half and comes back to where it began, then pull a straight line down the right side to the bottom line. A 9 is a circle and a line, and the pencil stays down. The circle is made first and sits up high, in the top half of the space. Nine is one less than ten, so show it with two hands: hold up ten fingers and fold one down.
Watch for: Mixing up 9 and 6. They are the same shape turned over. The 9 makes its circle first, at the top, and then goes down; the 6 slides down first and makes its loop at the bottom. Drawing the circle the wrong way round, going right from the start. The line then ends up on the left of the circle, which makes a backward 9 that looks like a P. Go left round the circle, as you would for a small a.
Common questions about number 9
- How is 9 different from 6?
- Where the circle is. On a 9 the circle is at the top and the line hangs down from it; on a 6 the line comes down first and the loop is at the bottom. Saying circle first, then down helps a child keep the 9 straight.
- Why does my child's 9 look like a P?
- The circle went round to the right, so the line ended up on its left. Start the circle going left, the same way as a small a or a c, and the line comes out on the right side.
