One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Kindergarten number tracing.

How to teach this

The 1 first, straight down from the top line to the bottom line. Then the 8: start at the top, just right of the middle of its space, curve left and down like the start of an S, cross the middle, swing round the bottom, and come back up through the middle to where you started. Make an S, then go home. Two small circles stacked like a snowman are a fine first step if the one-stroke 8 is still hard. A big truck called an eighteen wheeler has 18 wheels; count them in a picture.

Watch for: Writing 81 for 18. Eighteen says the eight first, so the 8 can come out first. The 1 is the ten and goes on the left. An 8 made of two circles that do not touch, so it splits into two shapes. The two halves meet in the middle.

Common questions about number 18

Is it okay if my child's 8 is two circles?
As a first step, yes. Two small circles stacked on top of each other make an 8 that reads well. Move to the one-stroke 8 when the circles are easy, because it is quicker to write.
How do I show 18 as ten and eight?
Fill one ten frame and put eight counters in a second one. The full frame is the 1 in 18, and the eight counters are the 8.
