Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every number
Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.
What's on each sheet
- Number tracing. Trace each number across the line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 8 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Preschool number tracing.
How to teach this
Start on the top line at the left and pull a short line straight down to about the middle. Without lifting, swing round to the right in a big belly that comes back to the bottom line on the left. Then lift the pencil, go back to the top of the first line and draw the hat, a short line along the top going right. Down, round, hat on. Leaving the hat for last is what keeps the 5 facing the right way. Five is a whole hand, so hold one up: five fingers is the easiest five there is.
Watch for: The 5 written like an S, curving at the top as well as the bottom. The top of a 5 is straight: a line down and a flat hat. Only the belly is round. Mixing up 5 and 2. They are close to mirror images. The 5 starts with a line down and has its curve at the bottom; the 2 starts with the curve at the top. Forgetting the hat. A 5 without its top line looks like a small s. If the hat keeps going missing, say hat on out loud at the end of every trace.
Common questions about number 5
- Why does the top of the 5 go on last?
- Drawing the line down and the belly first, then lifting for the hat, keeps the 5 facing the right way. Children who start with the hat often lose track of which way the belly goes.
- My child writes 5 like an S. Is that normal?
- Very normal at four. Show the corner: the 5 has a sharp corner where the line down meets the belly and a flat hat, where an S is curves all the way.
- How do I teach five with fingers?
- Hold up one hand and count each finger as you touch it. Five fingers is a hand, so five is the first number a child can carry around with them.
