One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Kindergarten number tracing.

How to teach this

Write the 1, a straight line from the top line to the bottom line. Then the 9: start at the top, toward the right of its space, go round to the left in a small circle that fills the top half and closes where it began, then pull a straight line down the right side to the bottom line. Circle first, then down. Show 19 with two ten frames, one full and one with a single empty box, and ask how many more it takes to make 20.

Watch for: Writing 91 for 19. Nineteen starts with nine, so the 9 can come first. The 1 for the ten sits on the left. Making the 9 like a 6, with the loop at the bottom, so 19 turns into 16. The 9 makes its circle at the top first. A 9 that looks like a P, because the circle went round to the right. Go left round the circle, the way you start a c.

Common questions about number 19

What comes after 19?
Twenty, and with it a new first numeral: a 2 for two tens. Count out 19 counters, add one to fill the second ten frame, and your child sees why the 1 changes to a 2.
My child's 19 looks like 16. Why?
The 9 was made with its loop at the bottom, like a 6. A 9 starts with a small circle at the top and then goes straight down. Practice one 9 alone on the number 9 page, then come back.
