Number 2 worksheets
A number 2 worksheet for ages three to five, in preschool or kindergarten. It prints eight rows of the numeral 2 as dotted outlines on penmanship guides, with room after each trace to write a 2 alone. The 2 is the first numeral with a curve and a corner, so it takes more practice than the 1.
Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every number
Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.
What's on each sheet
- Number tracing. Trace each number across the line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 8 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Preschool number tracing.
How to teach this
Start a little below the top line on the left. Curve up and over to the right like the top of a hook, then slant down to the bottom line on the left, and finish with a straight line along the bottom, going right. All of it is one stroke, so the pencil stays down until the end. Say it as you trace: around, down, across. Most of a 2 is the curve and the slant; the flat bottom line is what stops it from turning into a backward S. Two is a pair, so count pairs at home: two eyes, two shoes, two hands.
Watch for: The 2 facing the wrong way, with the curve bending left. It starts on the left and curves to the right, the same direction you read. Watch where the pencil lands for the first stroke, not how the finished 2 looks. Mixing up 2 and 5. Both have a curve and a straight line, facing opposite ways. The 2 starts with its curve at the top; the 5 starts with a line down and puts its curve at the bottom.
Common questions about number 2
- Why does my child write 2 backwards?
- Nearly every preschooler does at some point. A backward 2 usually starts from the right. Put a dot where the pencil should begin, a little below the top line on the left, and say around, down, across.
- How do I help my child tell 2 and 5 apart?
- Teach them by their first stroke. The 2 starts with a curve at the top; the 5 starts with a straight line down. Print the number 2 and number 5 sheets on different days rather than together.
- What should we count after the 2 sheet?
- Pairs. Socks, shoes, mittens and eyes all come in twos, so two is easy to see around the house.
