One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Preschool number tracing.

How to teach this

The 4 is the first numeral where the pencil lifts. Stroke one: start on the top line, pull down to just below the middle, then go straight across to the right. Lift the pencil. Stroke two: start on the dotted middle line, to the right of the first line, and pull straight down through the crossing line to the bottom line. Say down, across, lift, down. Books often print a 4 closed at the top like a triangle; both are right, and the open one is easier to write. Four legs on a chair or a dog is a good thing to count afterwards.

Watch for: The 4 facing the wrong way, with the crossing line pointing left. The first stroke goes down and then across to the right, toward the long line, never away from it. Drawing the closed 4 from a book as a triangle with a tail. It is not wrong, but it is harder to form at three and four. The open 4 on the sheet is two straight strokes, so start there.

Common questions about number 4

Why is the 4 open at the top?
The open 4 is what most children are taught to write, because it is two straight strokes. The closed 4 in books is a printing shape. Your child will read both and can write either.
Is it okay to lift the pencil when writing 4?
Yes, it has to lift. The 4 is two strokes: down and across, then a separate line down through the crossing line. A child who tries it in one stroke goes back up over the same line and the 4 comes out lumpy.
