One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Kindergarten number tracing.

How to teach this

Both numerals are the same plain line. Put the pencil on the top line and pull straight down to the bottom line, lift, leave a small gap, and pull the second line down the same way. Keep the two lines the same height and close together, so they read as one number and not two ones. The name is no help here, because eleven does not sound like one and one, so say eleven, one ten and one more, as you trace. Off the sheet, count out 11 crackers: ten in a row, then one more.

Watch for: Making the two lines different heights or far apart, so 11 reads as two separate numbers. Both lines start on the top line and stop on the bottom line, about a finger's width apart. Expecting 11 to sound like its numerals. Eleven and twelve are the two teen numbers whose names say nothing about the one and the two, so children learn them by heart. Saying one ten and one more beside the name helps.

Common questions about number 11

Why does 11 look like two 1s?
Because it is two 1s. The first 1 means one ten and the second means one more, so 11 is ten and one. A kindergartner does not need the words tens and ones yet; seeing ten counters and one more beside them is enough.
What should my child know before the number 11 sheet?
How to write 1 to 10, and the 1 above all. Eleven is two plain lines, so a child who can pull a straight line from the top line to the bottom line is ready for it.
