One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Kindergarten number tracing.

How to teach this

Write the 1 first, a straight line from the top line down to the bottom line. Lift, leave a small gap, and make the 2: start a little below the top line, curve up and over to the right, slant down to the bottom line on the left, and finish with a line along the bottom going right. Say one, then around, down, across. Twelve is a name to learn by heart, because it does not say two out loud. An egg carton holds 12 in two rows of six, a good thing to fill and count.

Watch for: Writing 21 for 12. The 1 always goes first, on the left, because it stands for the ten. A small dot at the left of each row is a good starting point. A 2 with no flat bottom, so it looks like a hook or a backward S. The line along the bottom is what makes it a 2.

Common questions about number 12

Why does my child write 21 for 12?
Twelve and twenty-one use the same two numerals, and the name twelve does not say which comes first. The 1 is the ten, so it goes on the left. Saying one ten and two as you trace 12 keeps the order straight.
How do I show twelve with an egg carton?
Put a counter in ten of the cups and stop: that is the ten. Fill the last two and the carton is full. Ten and two is 12, the same as the 1 and the 2 on the sheet.
