One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Preschool number tracing.

How to teach this

Start on the top line, toward the right. Curve down and to the left like the start of a big C, keep going round along the bottom line, then come up and close a small loop in the bottom half. One stroke, pencil down the whole time. A picture that helps: the 6 slides down from the top and lands in a puddle at the bottom. The loop sits low, between the middle line and the bottom line, and that is what makes it a 6 and not a 9. Six on a dice is two rows of three dots, a good thing to count together after the sheet.

Watch for: Mixing up 6 and 9. They are the same shape turned over. The 6 starts at the top and ends with its loop at the bottom; the 9 makes its loop at the top first and then goes down. The 6 facing the wrong way, with the loop on the left of the stem. The curve comes down on the left side and the loop closes on the right, like a C with a circle tucked inside the bottom.

Common questions about number 6

How do I stop my child mixing up 6 and 9?
Teach where each one starts. The 6 starts at the top and slides down into a loop at the bottom; the 9 makes a circle at the top, then a line down. If your child starts at the top and curves down, it is a 6. Print the 9 sheet on a different day.
Where does the pencil start on a 6?
On the top line, a little to the right. A 6 started at the bottom loop often comes out as a 9 or turns into an o with a tail.
