One page for every number

Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Kindergarten number tracing.

How to teach this

The 1 goes first, straight down from the top line to the bottom line. Then the 6, in one stroke: start on the top line toward the right, curve down and to the left like a big C, keep going round along the bottom line, and close a small loop in the bottom half. Say one, then down and round. The loop sits low; a loop at the top makes a 9, and 19 is a different number. Show 16 as a full ten frame and six counters, or count 16 steps together on the stairs.

Watch for: Writing 61 for 16. Sixteen starts with the sound of six, so the 6 goes down first. The 1 is the ten and sits on the left. Making the 6 with its loop at the top, so 16 turns into 19. The 6 starts at the top and ends with its loop at the bottom.

Common questions about number 16

My child's 16 looks like 19. What went wrong?
The 6 was made like a 9, with the circle first at the top. A 6 starts on the top line and slides down into its loop at the bottom. Trace one 6 alone, slowly, then go back to the row.
Do I need to teach tens and ones for 16?
Not as words. Showing it is enough: a full ten frame and six counters next to it is 16. Kindergarten math builds on that picture, every teen number as ten and some more.
