Free printable PDF worksheet, aligned to Common Core K.CC.A.3.
One page for every number
Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.
What's on each sheet
- Number tracing. Trace each number across the line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 8 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Kindergarten number tracing.
How to teach this
Write the 1, a straight line from the top line to the bottom line. Then the 5: a short line down from the top line to about the middle, then without lifting swing round to the right in a big belly that comes back to the bottom line on the left. Lift, and add the hat, a short line along the top going right. Down, round, hat on. Fifteen sounds like five at the start, so say one ten and five as you trace. Ten fingers and the five toes on one foot make 15, something to count together.
Watch for: Writing 51 for 15. The name starts with a sound like five, so the 5 comes out first. The 1 is the ten and goes on the left. Putting the hat on first, which often turns the 5 the wrong way round or makes it look like an S. The hat goes on last. Mixing up fifteen and fifty when listening. Stretch the teen when you say it, and show 15 as ten counters and five more.
Common questions about number 15
- Why does the 5 in 15 get its top line last?
- Leaving the hat for the end is what keeps the 5 facing the right way. The pencil goes down and round first, then lifts and adds the short line along the top.
- How can I tell if my child understands 15 and not just its shape?
- Ask for 15 of something, like crackers. If they count out ten and then five more, or count one by one to 15, they have it. Then let them trace the row.
