Number 1 worksheets
A number 1 worksheet for ages three to five, in preschool or starting kindergarten. It prints eight rows of the numeral 1 as dotted outlines on penmanship guides, with room after each trace to write a 1 alone. It is the easiest numeral to form, so it makes a good first sheet.
Free printable PDF worksheet.
One page for every number
Each number from 1 to 20 has its own page, with its strokes in words, the mix-ups to watch for and a sheet of that one numeral to trace. The numbers 1 to 10 are preschool pages and 11 to 20 kindergarten ones.
What's on each sheet
- Number tracing. Trace each number across the line. Then write it yourself on the rest of the line. 8 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
Whole ranges, like 1 to 10 or 11 to 20, print from one form on Preschool number tracing.
How to teach this
The 1 is a single line. Put the pencil on the top line and pull straight down to the bottom line in one go, without stopping in the middle. The 1 on this sheet is a plain line with no hat and no base; if your child's class adds a little flag at the top, that is fine too, as long as the pencil still starts at the top. Say "one" on every trace. Off the sheet, play a game of just one: one nose, one spoon, one block on the table, and hold up one finger each time.
Watch for: Pushing the line up from the bottom. A 1 drawn upward looks the same when it is done, but the same top-down line is part of 4 and 9. Watch the first trace on each row. Mixing up the numeral 1 with a capital I or a small l. In print they can look alike. Tell your child the 1 is a number and lives with the counting, and count something every time you write one.
Common questions about number 1
- Is number 1 too easy to need its own sheet?
- It is the easiest numeral, and that is the point. A three year old who can pull one straight line from the top line to the bottom line has the downstroke of 4 and 9 too. Use it as a warm-up before the curved numbers.
- Should the 1 have a little hat or a line at the bottom?
- The sheet prints a plain line. Many schools teach the plain 1 and some add a flag at the top. Either is right; pick the one your child's class uses and keep it the same every time.
- How do I teach what one means?
- Hold up one finger and touch one thing at a time: one cup, one shoe, one car. Then trace a row and say one on each copy.
