Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.
The words print in the order they come on a calendar, 6 to a sheet. Each print picks a starting point and carries on from there, going back to the first one after the last, so the order gets practice from anywhere in the list.
What's on a kindergarten sheet
Kindergarten sheets draw from 7 words, 6 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 7 words. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. 1st grade sheets print 7 to a page.
- Tracing. Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line. 6 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.
How to teach this
Say the days together before the pencil comes out, then point to each name as your child traces it. The sheet keeps the days in order, so the next row is always the next day. Ask "what comes after Tuesday?" before the row starts. Look for the capital first and praise it, then the letter shapes. Wednesday and Saturday are long, so a break after the third row is fine.
Watch for: A lowercase first letter is the mistake to watch for. Children write monday because they hear it as an ordinary word. Point to the capital on the traced copy before your child writes their own. The day names are long for small hands, and Wednesday is the one most often misspelled, because its first d is silent. Say it the way it is spelled, Wed-nes-day, while writing it.
Common questions about kindergarten days of the week
- Should kindergartners learn to spell the days of the week?
- Mostly they learn to say them in order and to recognize them on the classroom calendar. Tracing helps with both, because the child reads each name while writing it. Spelling all seven from memory is a 1st grade goal, so there is no need to test it yet.
- Why does the sheet show only six days?
- A kindergarten sheet has six rows so the letters can stay big. The six days are always in a row, and each print picks its own starting day, so over a few sheets your child traces all seven.
