How to teach this
A zigzag is slanted lines joined at sharp points, so it trains the hand to stop and change direction without lifting. Start at the dot, go up to the first point, stop for a moment, then go down to the next one. Saying "up, down, up, down" out loud helps. Keep the crayon on the paper the whole way across. Zigzags lead straight into the letters M, N, V, W and Z, and into the small letters v, w and z.
Watch for: Rounding the points into a wave. Stop at every point, then change direction. Lifting the crayon at each point. A zigzag is one line from the dot to the end. Starting on the right. The dot is on the left, and the line goes the way we read.
Common questions about zigzag lines tracing
- What is a zigzag line?
- A line that goes up and down in sharp points, like the teeth of a saw. On this sheet each zigzag starts at a dot on the left and runs across the page.
- My child's zigzag looks like waves. What helps?
- Ask them to stop at each point, count one, and then turn. The pause makes the corners sharp. Tracing slowly with a finger first helps too.
- What comes after zigzags?
- Wavy lines and curves, then loops. The other line pages under this one take those in that order, and the shape pages come after them.
