How to teach this

Slanted lines are harder than straight ones because the hand has to move down and sideways at the same time. Start every line at its dot at the top and pull down, following the arrow on the first line of each row. Lines down to the right and down to the left are the legs of A, the arms of V and W and the strokes of X, so both directions matter. Do the first three rows on one day and the other three on the next if the hand tires.

Watch for: Starting at the bottom and pushing up. Every slanted line here starts at its dot on top and comes down. Letting the line drift into a line straight down halfway. Keep heading for the end of the dotted line. Mixing up the two slants. The arrow on the first line of each row shows which way that row goes.

Common questions about slanted lines tracing

Why practise slanted lines before letters?
A, K, M, N, V, W, X, Y and Z all have slanted strokes. A child who can pull a slanted line down from a dot has the hard part of those letters already.
Why does the sheet have both slants?
Letters use both. The two legs of A and V go opposite ways, and so do the strokes of X. Three rows of each give the hand both directions.
What age are slanted lines for?
Most children copy a slanted line at four and a half to five, after straight lines across and down. If straight lines are still hard, start with the straight lines page.
