How to teach this

Start on the dot at the top point. Slant down to the right to the side corner and stop. Slant down to the left to the bottom point, stop, slant up to the left corner, stop, and slant back up to the dot. Every side is a slanted line, so this is the hardest shape on these pages for a young hand. Practice the triangle first, since its two slanted sides are half a diamond. The diamond's real name is rhombus, which comes in 3rd grade.

Watch for: Drawing a square on its corner. The diamond is tall and narrow: the top and bottom points are farther apart than the side corners. Rounding the points into an oval. Stop at each of the four corners before changing direction. Losing the slant on one side, so a side goes straight down. Every side of the diamond slants.

Common questions about diamond tracing

Is a diamond a real shape?
Yes. In math it is called a rhombus, a shape with four sides of the same length. Diamond is the everyday name, and the one preschool and kindergarten use.
Is a square on its corner a diamond?
No, it is still a square, just turned. The diamond on this sheet is taller than it is wide, so it cannot be mistaken for one.
Why is the diamond hard to draw?
All four sides slant, and slanted lines take more control than straight ones. The triangle is good practice first. Most children copy a diamond alone at six or seven, so tracing it is the step before.
