How to teach this
Loops are the hardest strokes on the lines pages, so they come last. The hand goes up, curls back to the left over the top, comes down crossing its own line and carries on to the right into the next loop. Trace a single loop with a finger a few times before using a crayon. Go slowly and keep the crayon on the paper. Loops are the start of the small letters l, e and b, and the joins of cursive writing later on.
Watch for: Going round the wrong way. Each loop goes up the right side and curls back to the left over the top. Leaving the loop open so it never crosses itself. Bring the line down through the bottom of the loop. Lifting the crayon after each loop. The row is one line from the dot to the end.
Common questions about loops tracing
- Why do children practise loops?
- Loops train the hand to turn a full circle while moving forward. They lead into the letters l, e and b and, later on, into cursive.
- My child can't do loops yet. Is that normal?
- Yes. Loops are the last of the pre-writing lines, and many children are four and a half or five before they are smooth. Go back to wavy and curved lines for a while and try again.
- Should the loops be the same size?
- As close as your child can get. The dotted loops are all one size, so tracing them is the practice. Size evens out with time.
