Wavy lines tracing worksheets
A wavy lines tracing worksheet for ages three to five. It prints six rows of dotted waves across the page. Each wave starts at a dot on the left, rises over a smooth hump, dips under a smooth dip and keeps going to the end of the row, with a box at the end to draw a wave alone.

One page for every line and shape
Each kind of line and each shape has its own page, with where to start, which way to go and a sheet of just that one to trace.
What's on each sheet
- One kind of line. Start at the dot and go the way the arrow points. Trace each line to its end, then draw one yourself in the box. 6 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
A mixed sheet of lines, waves, zigzags and shapes prints from Preschool tracing lines and shapes.
How to teach this
A wave is the zigzag with the corners taken out. Instead of stopping at a point, the hand rounds over the top and rounds under the bottom without a pause. Trace it slowly and say "over and under" as you go. Keep the crayon on the paper to the end of the row. If the waves come out pointy, the hand is stopping; if they come out flat, it is rushing. Waves are the curves inside s, the humps of m and n and the joins of cursive later on.
Watch for: Putting points on the waves. A wave never stops: round over the top, round under the bottom. Letting the waves shrink as the row goes on. Keep each one as tall as the dotted line. Lifting the crayon between waves. The whole row is one line from the dot.
Common questions about wavy lines tracing
- How is a wavy line different from a zigzag?
- A zigzag has sharp points where the hand stops and turns. A wavy line is round at the top and bottom, so the hand keeps moving. Most children find zigzags easier first.
- What age are wavy lines for?
- Around three and a half to four, once straight lines and zigzags are steady. There is no rush: wobbly waves traced in one go are a good start.
- How many rows should my child do?
- One or two at a sitting. Six rows on the page means the sheet lasts most of a week.
