Oval tracing worksheets
An oval tracing worksheet for ages three to five. It prints five rows of ovals as dotted outlines, each with a dot at the top and an arrow pointing left, plus a box on every row to draw an oval alone. An oval is a stretched circle, longer than it is tall, like an egg lying on its side.

One page for every line and shape
Each kind of line and each shape has its own page, with where to start, which way to go and a sheet of just that one to trace.
What's on each sheet
- One shape. Start at the dot and go the way the arrow points. Trace each shape, then draw one yourself. 5 rows per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this
Start on the dot at the top. Go round to the left, just like a circle, but stretch the curve out to the side: long across the top, round at the end, long across the bottom, round at the other end, and back to the dot. Trace a circle first if your child has one handy, then an oval, and talk about how the oval is the circle pulled long. Eggs, a running track and some mirrors are ovals to find around the house.
Watch for: Drawing a circle instead. The oval is wider than it is tall; follow the dots out to the ends. Pointy ends, like a lemon or an eye. The ends of an oval are round, not sharp. Going round to the right. Round to the left, the way a circle goes, keeps it ready for letters.
Common questions about oval tracing
- What is the difference between a circle and an oval?
- A circle is the same width every way you measure it. An oval is stretched, so it is longer one way than the other.
- Is an egg an oval?
- Close enough at this age. An egg is a little fatter at one end, but children learn oval from eggs, and the shape on this sheet is the even, egg-on-its-side version.
- Should my child learn circles before ovals?
- Yes. The oval is a circle that keeps going sideways, so the circle page comes first.
