Look at all the pictures first. Find the one that happens first and write 1 in its box, then keep going.

  1. Preschool

Sequencing is telling what happens first, next and last. Two short picture stories print out of order on this sheet, and a preschooler puts a 1 under the picture that comes first, then 2, 3 and 4. Most of the learning is in saying the story out loud. The numbers only write it down.

  2. Kindergarten

    Examples and teaching notes

Sequencing is putting the parts of a story in the order they happen. On this sheet a wordless story is printed out of order, and a kindergartner writes 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the boxes to show what came first, next and last. Two stories a page.

Sequencing is the order events happen in a story, and retelling it in that order is the first-grade reading standard. Each sheet prints two wordless picture stories with their panels shuffled; the child works out what happened first and writes the numbers 1 to 4 in the boxes underneath.

  4. 2nd grade

    Examples and teaching notes

By second grade sequencing is about story structure: how a beginning sets something up and an ending finishes it. These sheets keep that thinking without the reading load. Two picture stories print out of order, the child numbers the panels, and then retells each one aloud in the order they numbered.
