5th grade percent word problems worksheets

Grade 5 percent word problems ask one question in many costumes: what is this percent of that number? Seats reserved, laps finished, cans that turned out to be aluminum. Percent at this grade is an early introduction that many curricula and most workbooks include; the formal standard arrives in grade 6.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

The 10% move is the workhorse: divide by 10, then scale. For 30% take it three times; for 5% take half of it. Have your child say what 10% is before touching the pencil. If they can chant 10%, 20%, 5% for any number, every percent on the sheet is within reach.

Watch for: Kids treat the percent like a plain number and subtract it, turning 65% of 180 into 180 − 65. Percent is never an amount by itself; it's a share of the whole. Kids find 10% correctly and stop, so 65% of 180 comes back as 18. The 10% step is scaffolding. The question asks for six and a half of those pieces. Kids mix up the part and the whole, computing 180% of 65 instead of 65% of 180. The whole is the number that follows 'of' in the story.

Common questions about percent word problems

Is percent a fifth grade topic?
Formally it enters the standards in grade 6, but most fifth grade classrooms and workbooks introduce percent of a number, and searches for it at this grade are common. The sheet keeps to friendly percents and whole-number answers, so it works as a first exposure.
What kinds of percents show up?
Multiples of 5, from 10% up to 65%, chosen to decompose into tens and fives. Each problem names a whole, gives a percent, and asks for the part. The answer key shows the answer for every problem.
