How to teach this

Tie every percent on the page to coins: 10% is a dime out of a dollar, 25% a quarter, 50% half. Have your child say the fraction out loud first ("25% is one fourth"), then divide. If 25% of 80 stalls, ask for half of 80, then half again.

Watch for: Kids treat 25% of 60 as 25 × 60 or 60 − 25. Percent means out of 100, so 25% is 25 hundredths of the number. Kids put a % sign on the answer. 25% of 60 is 15 plain, a count of things, not a percent.

Common questions about percent of a number

Why only 10%, 20%, 25%, and 50% in 5th grade?
Those percents map to coins and simple fractions: a dime, a fifth, a quarter, a half. Once they feel automatic, the 5% steps in 6th grade are just combinations of them.
